Image of F.Bacon, 1985
Oil on canvas, 100 x 100 cm (detail) (no.537)

The first images in this series were made in 1979. Le Brocquy's head images have often been of people he has not known personally. Francis Bacon - along with W.B. Yeats and Samuel Beckett - is among the exceptions. Le Brocquy met Bacon in London in the fifties, when abstraction was the dominant tendency in painting.

'Louis le Brocquy belongs to a category of artists who have always existed - obsessed by figuration outside and on the other side of illustration - who are aware of the vast and potent possibilities of inventing ways by which fact and appearance can be reconjucgated.' - Francis Bacon, 1966
